Episode 44: Remote Scanning

• Describe the historical context and motivating factors behind the development of standardized remote MR scanning guidelines and the MR Safety Tech (MRST) certification by the American Board of MR Safety (ABMRS), including the post-COVID normalization of remote work and the shortage of experienced MR technologists.
• Identify the two distinct roles of the on-site MR Safety Tech (MRST) — as an assistant to the remote MR scanning technologist for patient-scanning tasks, and as the primary responsible party for on-site non-patient-scanning issues such as site access restriction, cryogen safety, and emergencies.
• Explain why the MRST is classified as a new "Level 1.5" MR personnel category, and outline the static-field, RF, and gradient safety knowledge expected of this role relative to traditional Level 1 and Level 2 personnel.
• Discuss the medical-legal framework underpinning remote MR scanning, including the requirement for traceable, contemporaneous, date- and time-stamped written orders between the remote MR scanning technologist and the on-site MRST, and the rationale for arguing that a properly implemented remote-plus-on-site model can be at least as safe as traditional single-technologist in-person scanning.
